Thursday 31/10Birdcall reports.
Black Redstart (2), Firecrest (1), Woodcock (1), Gdn Warbler (1) -West High Down, Totland

Report for October, from Russell W.

West High Down The highlight was an adult Great Grey Shrike found on 19/10
(This species is surprisingly rare on the island and this bird was only the third in the last decade,
so it was well appreciated by the rapidly assembled gathering of island birders).
It showed very well, and was seen eating wasps, beetles and grasshoppers, regurgitating pellets, and chasing Meadow Pipits.

The other highlight was the large number of Ring Ouzels seen during the month, with a peak of 26 on 11/10
Other Ring Ouzel sightings included 2 on 2nd, 4 on 7th, 1 on 8th and 6 on 19/10
In total I have seen 42 at this site in 2002, which is interesting to compare with my total of just one in the Lymington-Hurst area in the last decade!

A good fall of migrants in wet weather on 7th included 115 Song Thrushes, 7 Mistle Thrushes, 4 Ring Ouzels, 10+ Redwings, 50 Wrens, 70 Robins, 65 Chiffchaffs, 25 Goldcrests, 12 Blackcaps and 4 Wheatears,

Passage migrants that day included;-
single Merlin, Tree Pipit and Brambling, as well as 35 Skylarks, 60 Pied Wagtails, 110 Meadow Pipits, 40 Greenfiches, 285 Linnets and 350 Chaffinches. Other miscellaneous records included 2 Redstarts, Spotted Flycatcher, GSWoodpecker and Whinchat (2nd), an influx of 45 Blackbirds, single Brambling and Fieldfare, and 110 Pied Wagtails and 140 Chaffinches over (11th), and a good diurnal passage of single Woodlark and Snipe,130 Pied Wagtails, 130 Greenfinches, 11 Redpolls, 35 Skylarks, 35 Siskins, 6 Reed Buntings, 3 Yellowhammers, 8 Bramblings and 6 high-flying Jays (19th).
Insects included 2 Clouded Yellows early in the month.

On the Western Yar,
single Cetti's Warbler, Peregrine and Pintail were seen, and also up to 2 Ravens, 3 Spotshanks, 4 Water Rails, 14 Little Grebes, 15 Little Egrets, 18 Shoveler, 30 Stock Doves and 60 Blackwits.
